Looking for your next great find? At Interstate Storage, we occasionally host storage auctions to reclaim space from abandoned or delinquent units. These events are open to the public and offer a unique opportunity for bargain hunters, resellers, and collectors to bid on the entire contents of a storage unit.
Whether you are a seasoned "storage warrior" or a first-time bidder, our auctions are conducted with professional transparency and in strict accordance with Montana lien laws. Join the excitement and discover the treasures that may be waiting behind the next unit door.
How Our Auctions Work
Storage auctions occur when a tenant's rental fees remain unpaid for a specified period, typically exceeding 40-60 days in the state of Montana. To recoup lost rental income, the facility is authorized by law to sell the unit's contents to the highest bidder.
The Process:
- Public Notice: Upcoming auctions are advertised in advance through local newspaper as required by law, also we post on Interstate Storage Facebook Page and Events Calendar on the Interstate Storage Website.
- Registration: All participants must register before bidding begins. This may be done on-site for live auctions or through a verified online platform.
- The Preview: Bidders are allowed a brief glimpse inside the unit from the doorway. No one is permitted to enter the unit or touch the contents before the sale is final.
- Open Bidding: Units are sold as a "whole lot", you are bidding on every item inside the unit. The unit goes to the highest bidder.
Auction Rules & Tenant Rights
We strictly follow Montana Code Annotated (MCA) Title 70, Chapter 6 to ensure a fair process for both bidders and tenants.
- Tenant Redemption: The original tenant has the right to pay their balance in full and stop the auction at any time up until the winning bidder has made payment.
- As-Is Sales: All units are sold "as-is" and "where-is". There are no guarantees or warranties regarding the condition of the items inside.
- Cash-Only Payments: Winning bids must typically be paid in cash immediately following the auction.
- The 48-Hour Rule: Winning bidders are generally required to completely empty and clean the unit within 24 to 48 hours.
- Personal Items: Buyers are required to return highly personal items, such as birth certificates, photos, tax records, and legal IDs, to the facility office so they may be returned to the original owner.
- Prohibited Items: Any firearms found in a unit must be turned over to local law enforcement.
